Academy of Board Learning Experiences (ABLE) Certification
IASB designates specific learning experiences designed to ensure school board members have a firm foundation in the essential governance skills needed to carry out their responsibilities. To receive ABLE certification, board members must complete a scope of learning that introduces key concepts on school governance in Iowa.
ABLE certification requirements are designated throughout this publication. The complete requirements are:
1. Foundations of Effective Board Service (October - November workshops during election years)
2. Board Member Accountability workbook (self-study materials)
3. Leadership for Improved Student Learning (select one from among several options)
4. Fiscal Responsibility (select one from among several options)
ABLE certification coursework may be complete over any time frame, but it is recommended that newly elected board members complete the coursework within their first two years of service.
